An exciting event is coming to Jackson County and surrounding counties this coming weekend (July 26[th] & 27[th], 2024). It is the Boone Forest Rally Race! This year will feature a new Super Regional two-day format. The goal is to develop this event into a National Event that would last several days and garner attention nationwide. It is hopeful that this will happen next year! Backroads of Appalachia, Executive Director, Erik Hubbard wrote, "The Boone Forest Rally is more than just a series of races; it's a celebration of community and the unifying spirit of motorsports. Each year, as we gather amidst the breathtaking backdrop of the forest, we create an atmosphere that is electrifying and inspiring for fans of all ages. The impact of this event extends beyond the thrill of the race; it invigorates local businesses, providing an economic uplift that is vital for the region. Your presence supports a wide array of local enterprises, from quaint bed and breakfasts to bustling diners, ensuring that the rally's legacy is interwoven with the prosperity and growth of our community. Moreover, the rally serves as a beacon for youth and adults alike, sparking a passion for motorsports and nurturing future talents. The dedication, skill, and sportsmanship exhibited by the teams offer invaluable lessons in teamwork and perseverance. As we look forward to future events, we remain committed to not only delivering an exhilarating racing experience but also to being conscientious stewards of the environment and responsible members of the community. Your continued support and love for rallying make all our efforts worthwhile and lay the foundation for a legacy that will captivate and inspire generations to come."

What exactly is a Rally Race? Hubbard explained that "rally car racing" is a sanctioned sport that is the #2 Motorsport in the entire world. The purpose of a rally race is to provide a staged, timed event (one car race at a time) to determine the car/driver that is ultimately the fastest and the best in a controlled environment (In this case, a crooked gravel road). The roads being utilized this year will be within the Daniel Boone National Forest at S Tree Tower and Turkey Foot.

While the determining factor determining the winner of each race will be speed, the underlying safety precautions that underpin the races are the most important aspect of planning and executing the event. The drivers of the rally race cars are licensed professional drivers that received training and are sanctioned to compete. In order to be sanctioned to compete the drivers must meet specifications and similar (in some instances more rigorous) requirements as professional NASCAR drivers. Each driver will have a co-driver that tries to stay three steps ahead and keep the driver's informed regarding what is coming up. Speed safety is always the number one priority.

Of course, the Boone Rally Race will bring a great amount of attention to tourism in Jackson County and the surrounding region. This year the event will have elements held in four different counties: Jackson, Lee, Rockcastle, and Owsley. According to Director Erik Hubbard, the sole purpose of "Backroads of Appalachia" is to promote economic development through Motorsports in Jackson County and throughout the Appalachian region. The race will bring drivers and spectators to Jackson County. All the Air BnB's are expected to be sold out. The gas stations and restaurants will receive increased business. The race is really about the community. Community is First and the Race is Second! Join Us for an Unforgettable Rally Experience in McKee, Kentucky!
