Lady Generals Capture 13th Region All-A Conference Title in Thrilling Win Over Pineville
The Jackson County Lady Generals 7th/8th grade girls basketball team made their hometown proud tonight, bringing home the 13th Region All-A Conference championship in a nail-biting 33-30 victory over the Pineville Lady Mountain Lions. Jackson County's sole conference loss came in the last regular season game between the two teams. After splitting their regular season matchups, everyone knew this final game would be worth the price of admission -- and it didn't disappoint.
Jackson County showed up loud and proud in the stands, with many making the trip to Lynn Camp High School to cheer on the team! Jackson County trailed the majority of the game, but fought their way back, making it a 1 point ball game at the end of the 3rd quarter.
What sets this group of girls apart isn't just their skill on the court -- it's their grit. No matter the situation, they never back down. That grit led the team to rally in the fourth quarter, where they took their first lead of the night. While it takes points to win games, defense and rebounding were the buckle for the Lady Generals tonight in this scrappy win. The old saying goes, 'defense wins championships', and tonight was no exception.
The Lady Mountain Lions are a talented, well-coached team. In tonight's game, it was evident, there were two teams, hungry for a championship and no one was going away quietly. With the game on the line, Coaches Kelvin and Melony Bingham rallied their team in a late 4th quarter huddle, "Don't give up on me, girls!" Their words fueled the Lady Generals to dig deep and hold strong in the final minutes, sealing the deal and securing the victory for Jackson County. After the final buzzer sounded, Superintendent Renee Smith and Principal Jason Vaughn joined the coaches and players to claim the conference trophy and cut down the nets!
This win was especially sweet for Jackson County, as it capped off an incredible conference tournament run that saw both the 6th grade and 7th/8th grade Lady Generals bring home the 13th region All-A conference championships. These girls have given Jackson County plenty to be proud of- and they aren't finished yet. They finish up regular season play with a pair of North Laurel matchups, with October 1st being at North Laurel and October 7th at Jackson County, beginning at 5:30 on both nights. Then, the 6th grade Lady Generals will cap off the season on October 11th-13th in Lexington at the KY Middle School State Tournament, in hopes of competing for a chance to bring a state championship home to Jackson County! Game times will be released as soon as they become available.
It's always a great day to be a General!
