Appalachian Imagination: Remedies
October 31, 2024
For as long as there have been grannies, there have been home remedies.
Some may have worked and some maybe not but, my granny, as with all grannies, would work hard to get you on the mend.
Sore throats would require a toddy, poison ivy would be treated with egg whites or calamine lotions, while congestion or a "chest cold" as they would call it would require an onion poltice. I can vividly recall having a chest cold and my granny frying up an onion poltice. She would take all the ingredients that were fried, put them in a tube sock, pin it to the inside of your shirt and put you to bed for the night. I do think it helped, but even if it didn't, you would say that you felt better to keep from having to deal with the stink for another night.
On our local radio program Dial and Deal, folks will call in from time to time and share their remedies.
* Mrs. Connie Sandlin has taken the time and effort to write a bunch of them down. So we found it fitting to share with all the fine folks who read the Jackson County Sun.
* (NOTE - We do not recommend trying any of these remedies without consulting a medical professional!!!)
To list a few-
* Nose Bleed-put brown paper bag between gums, lay head back.
* Constipation-freeze Vaseline in pea size balls, take 2 more if needed.
* Boil on head-skin from inside egg shell, apply it to the sore.
* Impetigo-mix flour and butter milk, put it on the sore, wrap with a rag and let it dry.
* Diarrhea/sick stomach- coyota weed.
* Burn-rub with a raw potato.
* Boil-make poltice with Mother brand vinegar, and 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper.
* Bronchitis-1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, 2 drops of cayenne pepper in hot coffee.
* Bee Sting-leaves from 3 different random weeds, roll up and rub on sting.
* Poison ivy-Touch Me Not (wildflower) in Fall Bloom, rub on sting.
* Foot in Mouth-oatmeal in sock and place in bath water.
* Snake bite-sweet milk, and the white bloom of a water weed. (Go to the hospital!)
* Migraine-Soltice, run where head is hurting.
* Asthma (child)- put child through horse collar or measure child with dogwood stick.
* Earache-sweet oil.
* Cuts-honey poltice.
* 7 Year Itch- boil Polk root in water, pour into bath water.
Thank you Connie for taking the time to write all of these down over time and passing them along to us.
* Again, seek consultation from a medical professional before trying any home remedy.
