Judge Gabbard Provides Response to Weather Update

by County Judge Executive Shane Gabbard

Good Morning!

One thing about living in Kentucky is no matter what kind of weather you like, you will more than likely get to experience it living here. Of course, nobody likes flash floods but unfortunately when the ground is as saturated as it is now, it comes with extended rainfall. Jackson County was fortunate that we didn't receive the amount of damage as many of our neighboring counties but we did see damage. Most of it naturally was in low lying areas but we did have some citizens report damage on their properties in different areas.

Our Emergency Management staff has started doing damage assessments in places that have been reported and will be working on them for the next few weeks. I have been in contact with various State officials discussing damages and troubled areas. We are working with officials on a public and individual assistance request. At this time we are unsure if we will receive any assistance but we are documenting everything we know of. If you have had damage to culverts or private bridges, you can call 606-287-3838 or 606-287-9100 between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to report it. We will send someone to document it so we can try and get assistance for you. This is not a guarantee as the decision will be up to FEMA on what they will fund.

The snow that came in this past week was a separate issue altogether. We are used to snow events in Jackson County and most of our citizens know how to navigate treacherous conditions. The temperature as well as elevation plays critical roles in snow removal. State and local road crews have been active and doing the best they could in this winter storm but temperature plays a part in how fast it melts. The amount of traffic plays a part as well. The more traffic on a road the more the snow gets packed and harder to remove from asphalt surfaces. We encourage everyone to make sure they have blankets and emergency supplies in their vehicles in the event you get stranded.

Be safe and have a good week
