Judge Gabbard Proclaims March 21, 2025 as World Down Syndrome Awareness Day (Tyner Elementary had their own special guest)

 Official Proclamation 
 World Down Syndrome Awareness Day

Whereas, Down syndrome is a genetic disorder affecting one in 700 babies, or approximately 6,000 births per year in the United States; and

Whereas, Occurring from an individual having a full or partial extra copy of chromosome number 21, Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement and is one of the most common chromosomal conditions; and

Whereas, Individuals living with Down syndrome are independent, valuable, and active members of our communities who are dignified participants in a wide range of educational, occupational, social, and recreational activities; and

Whereas, Individuals with Down syndrome continue to face challenges of discrimination and bullying simply because they look different or sound different. The need for additional support for people with Down syndrome and community education around acceptance and inclusion is critical; and

Whereas, The Jackson County Fiscal Court wishes to acknowledge the importance of each individual that resides within our community, regardless of any genetic disorder

Therefore, I, Shane Gabbard, Jackson County Judge Executive,

Hereby proclaim March 21, 2025, to be recognized as World Down Syndrome Day in Jackson County, Kentucky
