2025 Generals Honor 1986 & 1987 Generals Teams (First to Win 49[th] District Championships)
Prior to their home game (April 18[th], 2025) against the Lincoln County Patriots, Coach Bowling and his 2025 Generals baseball squad honored the 1986 and 1987 49[th] District Championship teams coached by Robert Lakes (`86) and Ed Morgan Jr. (`87). These were the first two JCHS baseball teams to win 49[th] District titles.
Prior to the game the players, and coaches were announced along with some of the key milestones for each team. An honorary first pitch was thrown from 1986 & 87 Generals' Pitcher Mark McDaniel to Savannah Farmer, the daughter of 1986 Generals Hind Catcher Doug Lunsford.
The 1986 Generals team was composed of Coach Robert Lakes, Paul Edwards, Jr., Doug Lunsford, Rodney Morris, Pernell Vickers, Scott Lakes, Kevin Medlock, Greg Edwards, Shane Truett, Franklin Hobbs, Ronnie Brewer, David Smith, Dallas Hunter, Sonny Gabbard, Kevin Taylor, Shane Morris, Greg Wells, Louis Lakes, Paul McDaniels, Mark McDaniels, and Jeff Browning.
The 1987 Generals team was comprised of Coach Ed Morgan, Jr, Darren Van Winkel, Kevin Medlock, Greg Edwards, Shane Truett, Frankie Hobbs, Ronnie Brewer, David Smith, Dallas Hunter, Sonny Gabbard, Kevin Taylor, Shane Morris, Jesse Gray, Student Manager, Ritchie Neeley, Statistician, Charles Westerfield, Brian Murray, Greg Wells, Paul McDaniels, Mark Harrison, Jamie Strong, Louis Lakes, Kip Wells, Mark McDaniels, and Jeff Browning. That team had a season record of 16-4. They defeated Rockcastle County (13-2 in 5 innings for the 49[th] District Championship. They lost to Cumberland (6-2) in the 13[th] Region Semi-finals. Cumberland proceeded to defeat Middlesboro for the 13[th] Region Championship.
The Generals will also be honoring the 2018 district champion team at the field on May 9th against Owsley County, as part of the inaugural JCHS Generals Showcase weekend event. The 2018 team was led by head coach Dustin Coffey.
Coach Bowling reported, "It is very important for our players and staff to take time to recognize the achievements of those groups. They are the only three teams in school history to have won the district tournament, something that our current group of players is longing to accomplish as well. My hope is that all fans, players, and coaches of all four teams (1986. 1987, 2018, and the current edition) will join us to celebrate and honor our past Generals and the hard work they put into this program."
