Monticello Man Arrested After Overnight Crime Spree (including alleged attempted murder)

July 11, 2025

A Wayne County man was arrested after an overnight crime spree involving multiple stolen vehicles, an attempted ambulance theft, and an alleged attempt to run someone over, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff’s office says the incident began around 11:30 Thursday night when dispatchers received a report of a man attempting to steal an ambulance at Wayne County Hospital.

The man was reportedly unsuccessful but fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

About 15 minutes later, deputies were called to a home on O.P. Link Road, where another vehicle had just been stolen.

The suspect, identified as Anthony Dykes of Monticello, had allegedly entered the home asking to use a phone before leaving with the vehicle.

Later that night, a separate report came in from East Kentucky Highway 790, where Dykes was said to have asked for money and tried to enter another vehicle on the property.

While deputies were patrolling the area, a man flagged them down and reported that he had stopped to help someone he believed had wrecked. According to the sheriff’s office, the man said Dykes then stole his vehicle and turned around in the roadway, accelerating toward him in an apparent attempt to run him over.

Monticello Police later found Dykes walking along West Columbia Avenue. One of the stolen vehicles was recovered nearby, and another was found abandoned off Highway 790, according to the sheriff’s office.

Dykes was arrested just before 2:30 Friday morning.

He is charged with three counts of theft by unlawful taking of a vehicle valued between $10,000 and $1,000,000 and one count of attempted murder.

He is being held in the Wayne County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
