Appalachian Imagination: Melvin "Blue" Lakes
Melvin (Blue) Lakes was born and lived in Sand Gap, Kentucky until he was 10 years old. His family then moved to the city of McKee and began their business. Lake's Funeral Home.
After retiring from the Health Department, Blue ran for the office of Coroner in Jackson County and held the spot for 21 years without ever having to campaign. He also continued to work at the funeral home while he was Coroner.
Mr. Lakes shares with us, several stories from his youth, including how he got the nickname Blue. Another very comical story he tells is when he and another young man got their tails tanned for letting the chickens out of the coup.
A big highlight of this episode is Blue sharing stories of the way Jackson County used to be, and what closed down the theatre in Sand Gap.
Blue has always been a pillar of the community and has never failed to show love and compassion to everyone he meets. We were honored to have him as a guest.
