Jackson County JROTC Cadets Earn FAA Commercial Drone Licenses

Posted

The Jackson County High School JROTC program is celebrating a historic milestone after Cadets Jesse Campos and Zach Vickers became the first cadets in program history to successfully pass the FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone License examination.

The FAA Part 107 certification allows individuals to legally operate drones commercially in the United States, opening the door to a rapidly growing industry filled with career and entrepreneurial opportunities. This achievement marks a major step forward not only for the cadets, but also for the advancement of the JROTC drone education program.

By earning their certifications, Campos and Vickers now have the opportunity to use drone technology professionally in fields such as biological research, construction surveying, agriculture, real estate photography, emergency services, filmmaking, mapping, and infrastructure inspections. The drone industry continues to expand nationwide, and certified operators are becoming increasingly valuable in both public and private sectors.
Senior Army Instructor 1SG (Ret.) Anthony Saylor praised the cadets for their dedication and hard work throughout the process.

“I am proud to be a part of this achievement,” said 1SG (R) Saylor. “These cadets studied countless hours both in class and at home to prepare for this challenging examination. Their determination and work ethic truly paid off.”

The FAA Part 107 test is known for covering a wide range of complex aviation topics, including airspace classifications, weather interpretation, aviation regulations, safety procedures, sectional charts, and drone operation requirements. Passing the examination requires discipline, focus, and a strong understanding of aviation principles.
Both cadets spent months preparing through classroom instruction, independent study, and hands-on drone training provided through the JROTC program. Their success demonstrates the growing educational opportunities available through JROTC beyond traditional leadership training.

The accomplishment also highlights the continued modernization of the Jackson County JROTC program as it integrates emerging technology and career readiness into cadet instruction. Program leaders hope this achievement inspires future cadets to pursue drone certifications and explore careers in aviation and technology.
As the demand for licensed drone operators continues to rise across the country, Campos and Vickers now possess a valuable credential that may help them earn income and pursue future careers in an expanding field.

The Jackson County JROTC program congratulates Jesse Campos and Zach Vickers on their outstanding accomplishment and looks forward to seeing how they use their new skills and certifications in the future.

A big shout out to Mrs. Charity Rose and PRI for funding this incredible opportunity for our Cadets. Their support and investment in education, leadership, and career development is helping open doors for students to achieve success far beyond the classroom. Opportunities like earning an FAA Part 107 Commercial Drone License would not be possible without community partners who believe in our young leaders and their future.
