The Jackson County Water Association reports that the Water Line Extension Project along new Highway 30 South is 95% complete. The project entailed installing eight (8) miles of 8” Main along Highway 30 through Jackson County to the Laurel County line. This phase had a total cost of $2,421,000.00 and is scheduled for completion in April 2026.
Senator Robert Stivers and State Representative Timmy Truett worked hard in Frankfort to secure the funding for improving the water infrastructure for Jackson County. A total of $7.5 million was allocated for Jackson County in FY 25 for waterline expansions. This included a check for $5 million dollars that was presented to the JCWA for KY Highway 30 water line expansion. The funding was made possible by HB 1, legislation that makes one-time investments towards paying down public pension liabilities, improving water infrastructure, and preparing rural areas for economic development opportunities.
The next phase for the water line expansion along Highway 30 (referred to as Highway 30 North) is scheduled to go out for bids in April 2026. This phase of the project will install 7.5 miles of 8” Main with an estimated cost of $2,579,000.00.
Representative Truett stressed that new Highway 30 has great development potential, but that potential is stifled without an available water supply. “I am excited to see this much-needed funding coming to Jackson County as a means to invest in our community,” said Truett. Senator Stivers also emphasized that these projects will benefit the entire region and improve life for our neighboring counties such as Owsley, Lee, and Wolfe as well.
The funding secured by Senator Stivers and Representative Truett also included a check for 2.5 million that was presented to the JCWA to be obligated for water line expansion along Highway 290 for the residents near McKee, Ky. This project will provide water line expansion along Road 19 (Indian Ridge Road) and a pump station. This project is expected to go out for bid approximately in April 2026.
In addition, in February 2026 the JCWA was awarded a $400,000.00 Clean Water Act Grant that will be used to provide water line extensions for: 1) Mae Gumm Road, 2) Vickers & Bates Road, 3) Crank Road, and 4) Dunnigan Road. The project has already been put out for bids and was awarded to Mofield Brothers Construction Company, LLC.
