It looks like we are getting an early start to winter in Eastern Kentucky. It has been a long time since I remember it turning cold and staying cold this early in December. This week, I want to remind everyone to be ready when traveling, in case you get stranded.
Winter Driving Safety Tips:
* Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. This includes checking the tires, ensuring they have sufficient tread depth and are properly inflated. Also, check the battery, fluids (antifreeze, windshield washer fluid), wipers, and lights.
* Reduce your speed. Drive at a slower, cautious speed, especially on icy or snowy roads.
* Increase following distance. Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle and the one ahead to allow for longer braking distances.
* Use low beams. Use your headlights, especially during the day, to increase visibility.
* Be aware of black ice. Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that is difficult to see. Be extra cautious and slow down when you suspect it.
* Clear your vehicle. Before you drive, clear all snow and ice from your windows, mirrors, and roof.
* Plan your route. Check weather conditions and road closures before you head out. Consider alternative routes if necessary.
* Have an emergency kit. Keep a winter emergency kit in your vehicle with essential items like blankets, a first-aid kit, food, water, a flashlight, and a shovel.
* Know when not to drive. If the weather is extremely dangerous, it's best to stay off the roads. Consider postponing your trip if possible.
* Stay informed. Listen to the radio or check online for weather updates and road conditions.
Lastly the annual Christmas on the Square event is scheduled for this Thursday December 4th in downtown McKee. Visit the Jackson County Kentucky Fair Facebook page for more details
Have a blessed week.
