Sand Gap Elementary Makes History: Small School Doing BIG Things!

Posted

There is something special happening at Sand Gap Elementary!

For the first time in our school’s history, Sand Gap Elementary has earned a BLUE - Very High Achieving - rating, placing our school among Kentucky’s highest-performing schools!

For our students, staff, families, and the entire Sand Gap community, this is more than a color on a state accountability report. It represents years of hard work, high expectations, perseverance, and a shared belief that small schools can do BIG things!

We are the 70th ranked elementary school out of 715 schools, placing us in the top 10% of the state!

Our 2026 KSA results showed improvement across EVERY tested content area. The gains we saw tells the story of a school that was willing to work, grow, and believe in what was possible!

As administrators, we have had the privilege of watching firsthand the tremendous amount of work that went into reaching this milestone. Our teachers and staff studied the data, adjusted instruction, provided extra support, raised expectations, and continually asked, “What else can we do to help our kids succeed?”

This past year, we saw those efforts come together in a powerful way. Our teachers and staff were willing to have the hard conversations, make the necessary changes, and hold themselves and one another accountable. We worked together, supported one another, and remained focused on what mattered most: helping our students succeed.

The team we have at Sand Gap right now is bought in, locked in, and 100% committed to our vision. They believe in our students. They believe in one another. They hold high expectations, push each other to be better, and refuse to make excuses. Most importantly, they are determined to prove that our Tigers can accomplish extraordinary things!

This team believed in the process, put in the work, and made history.
We could not be prouder of them!

But this accomplishment belongs just as much to our students.
Our Tigers wanted this. They knew what we were working toward, and they accepted the challenge. They came to school focused, worked hard in their classrooms, took ownership of their learning, and believed they were capable of something special. When it was time to perform, our kids were locked in and ready to prove that Sand Gap students can compete with students anywhere.
And they did!

This was truly an all-hands-on-deck effort! Every single staff member in our building played an important role in making this accomplishment possible. From our classroom teachers and instructional staff to our support staff, office staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, and everyone in between, it took an entire school working together, believing in our students, and pushing toward the same goal.
Having Mrs. Wade and Mrs. Gabbard working alongside us, providing support, feedback, and coaching, was also a tremendous benefit and played an important role in our success.

We also cannot thank Mrs. Renee Smith enough for the tremendous support and encouragement she has provided since becoming Superintendent. She has believed in our school, supported our staff, celebrated our progress, and provided us with the resources and assistance we needed to continue moving forward. This accomplishment would not have been possible without her leadership and support.
We are incredibly proud, and make no mistake, we are going to celebrate this BIG!
Our students and staff have earned it.

But we also understand that this cannot be the finish line.
Even before this new school year began, preparation was already underway to build on last year’s progress. We've been studying our results, identifying opportunities for continued growth, strengthening instruction, and setting new goals. We know there are areas where we can become even better, and we are always looking for ways to improve.

Getting to Blue is incredible, but remaining Blue is the goal.
Our challenge now is to build upon what we have accomplished and establish a culture of excellence that lasts year after year. We want every student who walks through our doors to understand what it means to be a Sand Gap Tiger: to work hard, believe in yourself, take pride in where you come from, and never allow the size of your school or community to limit the size of your dreams.

To our teachers and staff: THANK YOU! Your work matters, your dedication has made a difference, and this achievement belongs to you.
To our students: you proved you can compete with anyone. Never forget it.
To our parents, families, and community: thank you for believing in our school, supporting our students, and standing behind the work we are doing.

We are Sand Gap!
We are BLUE!
And we are proving that small schools can do BIG things!
Go Tigers!
