In the previous Fiscal Court meeting, I reported to the court that we had received notice that we would not be receiving as much county road aide money as originally anticipated by the Office of Rural and Secondary Roads. The anticipated decrease was 5% of the total of the second payment to Jackson County. That is how I understood it but apparently I was mistaken. Our second payment is usually around $360,000. The second payment came in this past week and it was $180,000. I was very surprised when I opened it and immediately began calling and emailing the folks in Frankfort.
Jackson County's CRA contract for FY 26 was for a little over 1.3 million paid to us in 3 payments. When I received word back from Frankfort the following is what I was told. "The second payment was based on a revised total funding for the county road aid program due to a shortfall in revenue. This puts your new allotment at $1,162,310. With that said, that made the first check an overpayment. The second check corrected this overpayment by reducing the total. We are now paying off the revised CRA total. This was necessary so Counties do not owe us money at the close of the fiscal year."
A $200,000 decrease in funding is detrimental to our road fund and will make it very difficult to operate the remainder of the Fiscal Year. I was anticipating a $50-$60,000 cut, not $200,000.
I have informed the Magistrates as well as our legislators of the situation. We will do the best with road maintenance that we can but this causes us great problems. I will keep the community informed as we go along.
