Jackson County FFA Places Top in the Nation in the National FFA Homesite Contest

by Candrea Bingham, JCHS Agriculture Teacher/FFA Advisor

On Thursday May 1, 2025 Jackson County FFA along with 198 other teams representing 34 US states gathered in El Reno, Oklahoma for the National Land, Range, and Homesite contests.

This team of Jalee Davis, Larkin, Vaughn, Hailey Judd, Ary Miller, Malachi Shannon and Hannah York won the Kentucky River Regional Contest last October, and placed 2nd in the State of Kentucky in November. Since then the team has been preparing for a new set of rules and soil types in Oklahoma. The team arrived in Oklahoma City late Sunday evening and battled 10 inches of rain and storms Monday-Wednesday.

On Thursday, Jalee, Hailey, Larkin, and Ary hit the soil pits in west Oklahoma tasked with determining topsoil and subsoil textures, soil depth, slope, water table, and limitations as it would affect building a home or business on the chosen site.

That night at the banquet nerves were high as Jackson County's team members knew their scores were stacked close together, meaning they saw the same things at the sites. Jalee Davis was called to the stage first, earning the title of 6th place individual in the National Homesite Contest. This came after she tied in a 5 way tie for 2nd place. Shortly after Jackson County, KY was called to the stage as the overall 4th place team.

The team finished only 16 points out of first place. Jackson County FFA would like to thank the Jackson County Soil Conservation Service, Jackson County Farm Bureau, and the Jackson County Board of Education for their support on this trip.

They would also like to thank Doug and Jenny Wilson for helping chaperone and assist FFA Advisor Candrea Bingham in coaching the team while in Oklahoma. Congratulations to all!
