JCHS Lady Generals Volleyball vs Harlan County Lady Black Bears
On Thursday, October 10th the Jackson County Lady Generals Junior Varsity and Varsity Volleyball teams faced off against the Harlan County Lady Black Bears on home turf, ultimately resulting in a win for the Junior Varsity team and a closely fought loss for the Varsity girls.
The Junior Varsity Lady's would win the first and third sets with scores of 21-16 in the first and 21-17 in the third, securing their win over the Lady Black Bears. After the game, I spoke with Lydia Abner, a sophomore at JCHS and the highest-scoring player of the game. When asked what contributed most to the night's Junior Varsity victory, Abner wholeheartedly replied- "I think it was mainly our attitudes and we kept a good mindset: keeping our heads straight, focusing on the game, and lifting each other up." Watching these girls play, you can truly see the camaraderie that this group holds; without a doubt, they wouldn't be able to perform without their unity as a team.
Also, on that day, the Lady Generals Varsity Volleyball team would take on Harlan. After an abundant win in the first set, scoring 25-17, the Lady Generals would be defeated in the final two. Despite the loss, the Varsity team held their heads high and continued to cheer on their teammates who had won in the previous game. While speaking with Shelby Berry, a senior at Jackson County High School who recently committed to the University of the Cumberlands as well as being the game's highest-scoring player, I asked her what she felt was the turning point of the night's game. After much thought, Berry responded with- "First of all, we tend to have really bad luck, our second sets are usually terrible. That's something that we've been trying to work on, but I think for this game it was really just a lack of motivation, and a lot of our girls tend to get in our own heads- which is common, I do that myself a lot. But, it's okay we're all a work in progress and we're going to move on and this was a great experience to learn from." Much like Shelby said, this team continues to grow and learn from each and every game. With few games left in the season, I can't wait to see what the Lady Generals have in store.
